As a parent or carer, you’ll want to give your baby the best bedding possible. To do this, you need to choose the right material and types of bedding. We have some great tips that can help you choose the right bedding for your baby's bed.

Sheet material

When choosing the material for your baby's bedding, you should always opt for 100% cotton. Baby’s skin is very sensitive, delicate and soft. Artificial fibres such as polyester can cause itching and skin irritation. Cotton is a naturally breathable material that is suitable for even the most delicate skin. When choosing cotton bedding, select organic cotton; produced without pesticides, organic cotton retains more of its natural soft properties. In addition, residue from pesticides can remain in non-organic cotton bed sheets; this can cause irritation and exacerbate skin conditions. Babies deserve the very best bedding material to protect their skin.

Sheet fit

Too many blankets are dangerous for a baby. The bottom sheet needs to be tightly fitted at each corner of the mattress to protect your baby. There should be no sag or loose material in the sheet. You can use fitted sheets for ease, but always make sure the elastic is strong enough to keep it on the mattress. You can use flat sheets if they are tightly tucked into the mattress, but most people recommend fitted sheets as flat sheets can come loose. Make sure you regularly check the elastic and fit of your baby’s bed sheet; if the elastic starts to wear after washing, you should purchase new sheets.

Mattress protector

Sometimes a nappy isn’t enough, and it can leak during the night or the day when your baby is napping. This leakage can go through the sheets and onto their mattress. Always place a mattress protector directly on top of the mattress to keep the mattress clean and prevent damage. Having multiple different sets of fitted sheets and mattress protectors will make things easier and ensure you always have a set for your baby’s bed. If anything does leak you can wash the mattress protector and sheets and replace the ones on your baby's bed.

Washable

Baby bedding needs to be washable; your little one will have accidents and dribble on their sheets. Before washing, check the recommended washing instructions so you can maintain the softness of your baby’s sheets. In addition, you should wash items with a gentle non-biological washing detergent; there are plenty of options available; just make sure you check that the washing detergent you use is suitable for sensitive skin.

Pillows

Your baby doesn’t need any pillows; in fact, they can be dangerous for your baby. A good quality mattress will keep your baby’s head and neck supported and comfortable whilst they sleep. Recommendations state you should purchase a new mattress for your baby rather than use one that’s second-hand unless it's in very good condition.

Baby sleeping bag

Many new parents choose to use a baby sleeping bag to keep their baby safe and warm when they're sleeping. Sleeping bags are a good option as they prevent any covers or blankets from coming into contact with your baby’s face, which can be a suffocation hazard. Make sure the sleeping bag isn’t too large, as your baby could slip down between the straps.

Cellular blankets

Cellular blankets are designed to regulate a baby’s body temperature and keep them warm but not too hot. These blankets can be used with a baby sleeping bag or on their own when sleeping. They also have large holes, which make them much safer if they do come loose and your baby manages to pull them over their head. To prevent this, always tuck the blankets securely underneath the mattress and make sure the blanket doesn’t come above the baby's arms. Arms should always be out unless you choose to swaddle your baby.

You’ll want to get everything right when you have a new baby. Baby bedding can be a source of worry for many new parents, but it doesn't need to be complicated. What works for one parent might not work for another, do your own research and make sure you use reliable sources of information.
